~~~~This is an official review from an NGUAC judge for the 2020 NGUAC Knock-out round!!~~~~
I like to type my first impressions on my first listen as I go so HERE WE GO.
Loving this spacey intro, good instrument, good variation at the end.
That crash is a bit loud in the mix but loving everything else here.
Okay once the drums really kick in and the guitar track kicks in it gets a bit muddy. Lots of stuff all happening at once. The EQ on the guitar is really heavy in the mid range. ADR3-N said a lot of what I could say really. There are spots where your stereo and eq field are filled REALLY WELL, like 1:37 sounds pretty good, then there are certain instruments that are too conflicting, and you might consider dropping out other elements to make room for what you want to be heard, maybe try not to let multiple things exist in the same frequency spectrum. I REALLY love the sound and effects at 2:00. Sounds like maybe you have a bit crusher on a voice and i just LOVE this effect and the other creepy pads you added in.
The structure overall IS a bit iffy, but I really like your transitions, mainly the one into 2:00, big fan of that. The final section at 3:00 the drums could really stand out more. Maybe through some sidechain compression, maybe your mix is off.
Good small build up into a mini climax into the end with a held note, very live rock band style, it works.
Overall, loving the ideas here, could use some work on the mixing elements, and everything else that ADR3-N said really. They also know a lot more about guitar mixing it seems! Maybe some more dynamic guitars and a little more in between could be a good change of pace, meaning, some sort of inbetween of your big climactic moments with all the drums, and the ones at the beginning and 2:00.
Good work! Good luck in the NGUAC
Really well done! Surprisingly refreshing for a seemingly generic dubstep song (Its not generic at all.)
The only real thing I have to say is it feels a little over compressed or whatever you did to the master, the drops have a bit of clipping, but sometimes i like the sound of clipping on my basses too.
This is very loud.
I guess that's waht this genre wants though. I just like a cleaner mix personally.
Well done.
Good luck in the NGUAC!
DJ-Zyzyx responds:
To be honest I like a cleaner mix too! I actually didn't master this one, I just had my friend quickly do it for me. I now know how to master properly, since I made this a while ago xD Thank you for the review!
I love your incredibly unique style, and I love your sound design.
Very little to say about this one. And that is a pretty good sign.
I want that whistle sound.
Good luck in the nguac!
Jakki responds:
I am flattered. Truly.
The whistle sound is from Sakura. I can't remember which one of them it was, but probably from Sonic Haiku bank
Thank you!
Man.
Ceevro.
This is good., ugh so much soul. If I at all was able to compose for guitar (which hopefully will change in the future) This is like, exactly the style I Imagine. I even have this thing I jam out to that is very similar.
I LOVE the main "hook" or whatever you want to call it. The rhythm, everything about it.
I really wanted to hear a bit of variation. But it was still so good.
You need some better recording equipment. That room noise and high end recording hiss is holding you back man. this . is. greaet.
Well done.
Good luck in the Nguac
Ceevro responds:
Sadly, my equipment is good. My space, however, is not. I need a way to separate my computer from my mic while still being able to use both...it's hard, being both the recording engineer AND the musician at the same time!
I have a few idea, but they cost more money than I can spend at the moment. I think I should try to limit myself to electric guitar in future rounds...though I'd lose ALL the acoustic percussion that I love doing so much.
Dang....never an easy way. 'Tis the lot of the musician!
I love the over all vibe of this. as a soundtrack piece, this is awesome.
I have a feeling with the, flute? piccolo? unsure, that you were going for a very distant effect, which is used in orchestral music often. I loved the direction, however the mixing on the reverb was a little off, it just didnt quite have the right kind of reflections or SOMETHING about the reverb was just off, and it was way too drowned. BUT I still loved it. This gave me a very "interstellar" Hans zimmer vibe, i quite liked it. I was hoping for some harmonic variation, but overall, great pice.
Good luck in the NGUAC!
Bertn1991 responds:
Your review was concise but thorough. I appreciate the feedback tremendously. A comparison to Hans Zimmer means a lot by the way :D Also, I've never been the best with mixing and reverb. But anyways, thanks again for your honest review.
WOW. Your sounds are awesome. I seriously want your library. Im stuck in this pit of basic VST's and I can only do SO much with them. This was a great composition and man that oboe, Those VOICES. SO GOOD. Very little to say negatively about this
Well done. Good luck!
Azhthar responds:
Hey! Thanks a lot for the nice feedback! Glad you liked it.
Ah man. This one is really hard to judge without a SUPER biased opinion. Future bass will always have a HUGE soft spot in my heart. It is the genre I almost ALWAYS stick to when writing. I just love it.
THAT BEING SAID> I am able to judge it pretty harshly as well, since I am just ALL OVER THIS GENRE.
That being said. I am super jealous of your gear. Man I need better VST'S and samples. Your sounds are just. UGH. WHAT I WANT IN MY LIFE.
THAT being said. this was awesome. Great mixing, great rhythmic style, very Seven Lions meets FUTURE. Lots of Nuance. Love it. Great change up and crisp sound in the second verse.
Would've loved to hear something different happen in the second drop. But meh that doesnt always work in the genre. So It great.
Honestly this is great. I Look forward to your future entries.
Good luck!!
8-bitheroes responds:
Thanks for the review, glad you enjoyed it! Future bass <3
Onefin responds:
oh hey trunotfalls
yeah i definitely don't mind i've gotten my fair share of feedback from ngadm anyway
If yoou ever come or move to colorado, ill drum for you. Youre a good writer. mmm
FinnMK responds:
Thanks a bunch guy! I'll keep it in mind if I find myself down there.
Love your lyrics. Love your mind. Love the chord variations you threw in, the Trombone was a NICE touch. Really about the only things I have to say about this piece, is I can't hear the snare at all, ONLY on drum fills, could've used some more particular eq'ing and mastering, but other than that, WELL done. ;)
FinnMK responds:
Thanks so much for the kind words and the feedback! I've never had people comment on my lyrics before but I feel like I'm getting to a point where I'm starting to be able to reach people with the words ( a whole new emotionally threatening territory for me!) as well as the music. This isn't the first time I've heard someone comment about low snare volume on one of my tracks though - rest assured I'll work on pumping it up in the future.
